A mum-of-three told she had just months to live is determined to prove her doctors wrong - and give her kids the trip of a lifetime.

Gemma Watson has battled melanoma, a rare and serious form of skin cancer, since she was 21.

But after previous successful treatments it was in December last year that the 27-year-old was told her condition was now terminal.

Seven months later though she's still here and determined to keep going, the Chronicle reports.

Defying Odds: Gemma Watson was given three months to live but says she wants to prove her doctors wrong.

Gemma, of Fawdon in Newcastle, said: “It was horrible, at first I went to the hospital and the consultant came and said to get my husband as we needed to talk.

“We did not expect it to be terminal, I thought they would be able to operate because they had previously but when I asked she said they couldn’t because every place it was in was inoperable.

“I didn’t want to cry because I didn’t want my husband to get upset,” said Gemma, who lives with husband Robert and their children Lucy, seven, Josh, six, and 22-month-old Joel.

Now Gemma is trying to make every day with her family count but said the mix of drugs she takes for her treatment leave her in pain and steroids mean she barely recognises her reflection in the mirror.

“I am determined not to give up, I want to prove them wrong and keep going,” said Gemma.

“I think I can sense how my body is, even though my joints hurt and I feel like and 80-year-old because of the medication, I feel I am ok. I do not feel like a dying person, I just think I am going to be ok. I know it will happen one day and it is horrible and some days I can not talk about it but some days I am ok.

“The hardest thing I have to remember is that I am not going to see my kids grow up, have partners, get married. It is horrible,” she said.

Raising Awareness: Gemma is raising awareness of the disease and sun protection after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Gemma, who said she used sunbeds every now and then between the ages of 16 and 18, first noticed two moles on her right leg in 2008 when she was pregnant with daughter Lucy. She was told it was Stage 1A and had an operation to remove the tumours.

After that she went for regular check ups but it was in September 2012 after the birth of son Joel, Gemma noticed a lump near her pelvis. She was told it was scar tissue from the C-Section and it was not until September last year that the situation escalated.

A tumour the size of a large orange was found on the right side of her pelvis attached to her right ovary, but this time the cancer was Stage 3B and Gemma underwent another operation in October last year to remove it.

Six weeks later a CT scan revealed the cancer had returned but had spread through her organs to her liver, stomach and spleen.

“Two weeks before Christmas I was told I had three months to live,” said Gemma.

“I am on drugs from America, you can not get better on them but they prolong your life. They gave me three months but that was not knowing how I would take to the treatment.

“Treatment is not going great but I have got through that three month mark.”

Family Fun: Gemma wants to give her kids as many happy memories as possible, like this fun filled trip to Flamingo Land with children Josh and Lucy.

Now all Gemma and her family can do is wait for each scan to reveal how she is doing. But in the meantime the mum-of-three wants to make some special memories with her young family and is raising money to take the family to Disneyland Paris.

“We are trying to make as many memories as possible,” said Gemma, who has been married to Robert for four years.

“We are going to Alton Towers on Monday, it is about having a lot of nice experiences with the kids. If we dont’ get to Disneyland I hope what we have done will be enough.

“We always said we would go to Disneyland when Joel was older but I can’t wait until they are old.

“I really want to see their faces when we surprise them and I feel if I do not I have failed, that is the one thing I want to do, that’s it,” she said.
