Honking on Janpath leads to clash
NEW DELHI: An argument over honking turned ugly early on Saturday, with two groups of youngsters, including two women, coming to blows outside Le Meridien Hotel on Janpath. All the persons involved in the fight have been arrested.
The drama began around midnight when Naveen, Mayur, Nikhil and their two women friends were leaving the hotel in two cars after a party. Nikhil, who was driving one of the cars, found a truck waiting near the exit gate and started honking for the driver to give way.
At this, a youth named Siddharth, who was standing with his friends Harpreet and Kunal outside a bungalow on Janpath, came up and asked him to stop honking.
The argument between Siddharth and Nikhil led to a fight between the two sides in which the women also got involved. One of them had her dress torn as she was pushed around. Police arrived on the scene after one of the women made a distress call.
"The entire incident was captured by the CCTV cameras, therefore we registered a case and have arrested all of them," said SBS Tyagi, additional CP, New Delhi.
All the accused were taken to hospital and treated for abrasions and bruises. They were later brought to Parliament Street police station where neither group gave a formal complaint but leveled allegations against each other. Also, after initially alleging assault, the women refused to register a case of molestation.
Siddharth told police that he is the nephew of a politician from Haryana and was staying at the Janpath bungalow. Police said the youths in the other group were MBA students from a private university in Delhi who live in Malviya Nagar. All of them are children of businessmen in the area.
Police have registered a case of rioting and disruption of public order against both sides.
