A 23-year-old man has been given jail time for his role in the theft of a 2014 Sochi Olympic ring from an Alberta motel.

Terrell Cardinal has been sentenced to one year imprisonment and fined $200 after he pleaded guilty to two counts of break and enter, which resulted in the theft of an Olympic ring from Canadian curler Brad Jacobs.

Officials said the ring was among items taken from motel rooms in Boyle on June 21, where Jacobs was participating in a charity event.

In a press release, police said they will return the ring to Jacobs shortly and that other items stolen have already been returned.

A woman who was also charged in the case will make her first court appearance in Boyle provincial court on August 26.
