Fireman’s widow gets nurse’s job at Bhagwati hospital

Shubhangi, who holds a diploma in nursing from KEM hospital, will join the Borivali-based hospital as a staff nurse after 13 days.

A week after 35-year-old fireman Nitin Baghuram Ivlekar lost his life in a fire that blazed the Lotus Business Park, Andheri (West), his wife, Shubhangi Ivlekar (31) has been given a job by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Shubhangi, who staged a seven-hour long mute protest outside the Byculla fire station on July 19, will soon serve as a nurse at the civic-run Bhagwati Hospital.

Shubhangi, who holds a diploma in nursing from KEM hospital, will join the Borivali-based hospital as a staff nurse after 13 days. Her appointment offer, handed over by BMC on Friday, requested her to join work from Saturday onwards. Two job applications, which were ahead of Shubhangi, were skipped by BMC to give her a job on priority basis.

“I was given the offer letter today (Friday). But since I cannot arrange my uniform so quickly or leave both my kids alone at home without someone to watch over, I have decided to join in a few days,” said Shubhangi.

She had earlier worked at Bhatia Hospital, but had quit to take care of her young children. Her husband succumbed to burn injuries after he was trapped in the 22-storey commercial building on July 18. The building’s top three floors were gutted when the flames spread rapidly.

Even as the family is happy with the prompt action taken by the civic body, Nitin’s presence is sorely missed. His sister Vaishali Shreewardhan said “He was supposed to shift to Mankhurd as I can deliver my baby anytime. He had given me Rs 10,000 for delivery even though he was facing a financial crises.”

Festive offer

Faced with financial difficulties, Shubhangi is tensed about repaying the loan of their newly-possessed Virar flat, which the couple had booked in 2009 for over Rs 7 lakh. Nitin was also saving money to make his elder daughter Suha (6) a doctor. Shubhangi now has to bear the education expenses of both her daughters, Suha and Sanvi (2).

According to family, Nitin’s mother Bropadi Ivlekar will shift from her Mankhurd flat to the Virar flat to take care of both the children when Shubhangi goes for work, soon after Vaishali delivers her baby.
