Pavitra Bhardwaj suicide case: Principal’s suspension revoked

The news of revocation led to protests from teachers who called it illegal.

Nearly 10 months after a former employee of Delhi University’s Bhim Rao Ambedkar College set herself on fire, alleging sexual harassment by the college principal, the suspension order against the principal G K Arora was revoked on Friday.

A letter from the college governing body chairman, dated July 24, said, “The Vice-Chancellor, DU, has approved the recommendation of the undersigned for revocation of your suspension… You are kindly requested to resume duties as principal of Bhim Rao Ambedkar College in place of acting principal Dr R B Solanki with immediate effect.”

The news of revocation led to protests from teachers who called it illegal.

A letter signed by DU Teachers’ Association President Nandita Narain and other teachers said, “We take serious note of the manner in which the chairman, has on the grave matter of Ms Pavitra Bhardwaj case, without placing the matter before the governing body, has proceeded to recommend to the Vice-Chancellor that the suspension of Dr G K Arora be revoked.”

On September 30, 2013, Pavitra had set herself on fire in front of the Delhi Secretariat. She had succumbed to injuries on October 7. She had alleged that she was sexually and mentally harassed by the principal and another staff member.
