Two of the richest men in the world seem to believe so. Google CEO Larry Page told venture capital investor Vinod Khosla during a public chat that the 40-hour work week that many stick to is for social rather than financial reasons. And Mexican telecom billionaire Carlos Slim has called for a three-day working week with workers at their desks for more hours every day as well as working for more years. The UK has already made flexible working hours a part of its labour policy.
These may seem very whimsical ideas, but it is useful to remember that the nature of work has gone through several transformations over the centuries. And much of the developed world has already moved beyond the merciless Taylorism that Chaplin took apart in Modern Times.
