What you need to know:

  • Siku Poa insists on the importance of enjoying life despite the challenges that come with it.
  • Like many debutants he has had to struggle in order to prove himself in an already competitive market.
  • The main challenge has been the limited number of quality producers in the country.
  • Getting exposure through airplay has also been a big challenge.

He intends to raise Githurai’s flag high up, as was once done years back through Mr Googz and Vinnie Banton’s song, ‘Tumetoka Githurai.

His latest hit Siku Poa, is about the hard life of Nairobi’s Makongeni Estate, where Richard Macharia alias Masha was born and raised.

“This is one of the 12 hits that make up my debut album Siku Poa,” he says.

One of the reasons that has seen this song gain popularity each day, he says, is due to the fact that it insists on the importance of enjoying life despite the challenges that come with it.

“As for the album, it is still in the production process. It has songs like ‘Penzi Tamu’, Siku Poa,’ ‘Hurray,’ ‘Overdose,’ ‘Johnny,’ ‘Uko Single’ and ‘Habibi’,” he explains.

VARIETY OF FANS

According to him the album is perfect as it has different music genres, a fact that he believes will attract a variety of fans.

But things have not been easy for Masha.

Like many debutants he has had to struggle in order to prove himself in an already competitive market.

The main challenge, he says, has been the limited number of quality producers in the country.

“The few we have must attend to a huge number of artistes, meaning that it takes time before a song is recorded,” he explains.

He is also quick to point out the issue of getting airplay, an issue that has proved to be a thorn in the flesh of many upcoming artistes.

This however, has not dimmed his dream of making it in this highly demanding stage, as he hopes to one time get a chance of working with well-known names in the industry like Wyre, Jua Cali, Habida and Sana.

“On the international scene, I hope to one day sing along great musicians like Papa Wemba, D'banj, Ayi Bebe Cool and Lady Jay Dee just to name but a few.
