SEOUL — “The Dark Valley,” an Austrian-German co-production depicting a lonesome Alpine cowboy was named as the winner of the Puchon Choice Award at the Puchon International Fantastic Festival (PiFan), South Korea‘s biggest genre film festival.

Directed by Austria’s Andreas Prochaska, the film (pictured) was selected by a jury which included renowned Korean director Sung Soo Kim (“Musa,” “Flu”) and actress Min Soo Jo of “Pieta”.

Other winners at this year’s PiFan included Norway’s Tommy Wirkola whose “Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead” nabbed best director, best actor and audience awards.

Essie Davis of “The Babadook” nabbed the best actress prize while Fruit Chan’s “The Midnight After” scored a jury prize.

In its 18th edition, PiFan wrapped its competitive sections on Friday but will run into the weekend when it will screen award winning and popular titles.

The festival’s industry wing, Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF), wrapped earlier in the week where the top award went to India’s Dev Benegal for his project, “Dead End”.
