Writing a screenplay is very different from writing a book. Yet, there have been many filmmakers who have succeeded in bringing a common platform for the book lovers and cinema lovers. Here's a list of films that are based on novels and books:

Fifty Shades of Grey - A romantic drama film directed by Kelly Marcel, it is one of the most anticipated films of 2015, releasing on Valentine's week. The star cast includes Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. The first trailer is already out and has met the expectations of the E.L James' erotic novels' fan.

Guide: Based on the critically acclaimed novel The Guide by R.K. Narayan, the film features a romantic drama, with the evergreen star Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman playing the lead. Although the climax of the film and that of the novel varies to some extent, the film went on to win many awards including Filmfare Award for Best Film, Filmfare Award for Best Actor, Filmfare Award for Best Actress, Filmfare Award for Best Dialogue, Filmfare Award for Best Director, Filmfare Award for Best Story and Filmfare Award for Best Cinematographer.

Devdas (2002): Devdas 2013 was the third Hindi version of the Bengali romantic novel written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. The star cast included Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai.

Father of the Bride - An instant New York Times best-seller, the movie was based on Edward Streeter's Father of the Bride, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Spencer Tracey.

3 Idiots: Adapted from the best seller novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat, the movie became the highest grossing Bollywood movie of all time, starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sherman Joshi, Boman Irani and R. Madhavan as lead actors.

Memoirs of a Geisha - Based on Arthur Golden's novel Memoirs of a Geisha, the film has been directed by Rob Marshall. The protagonist Sayuri recalls how she transcended her fishing-village roots and became one of Japan's most popular geisha.

Saawariya: Marking the debut of Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor, the film was directed by Sanjay Leela Bansali and is based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's short story White Nights. It was the first Bollywood movie to be released in Blu ray Disc.

Omkara: The Indian crime drama film directed by Vishal Bhardwaj with Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan as main leads is an adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello.

The Exorcist - Adapted from William Peter Blatty's novel The Exorcist, this movie has been directed by William Friedkin. A supernatural horror film, the film like the novel is based on the 1949 exorcism case of Roland Doe, dealing with the demonic possession of a 12-year- old girl.

Tere Mere Sapne: The film directed by Vijay Anand is based on the novel The Citadel by A J Cronin. The film starring Dev Anand and Mumtaz in the lead roles was made in 1972 and as Bengali film Jiban Saikate with Soumitra Chatterjee and Aparna Sen and in 1982. It was remade into the Telugu film Madhura Swapnam.
