Places from Gujarat in tentative list of Indian nominations for World Heritage Sites


New Delhi, 25 July 2014

UNESCO recently declared Gujarat’s Queens Stepwell(Patan) as World Heritage Site. Earlier UNESCO had declared Gujarat’s Champaner as World Heritage Site. But for Gujarat, this is not the end.

There are five more sites from Gujarat listed under the tentative list.

As per Union minister Shri Shripad Naik’s reply to Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani, “As per Operational Guidelines of World Heritage Committee, to consider the proposal for inscription in World Heritage List, the property need to be listed under the Tentative list.” Among total 46 Indian sites in tentative list of UNESCO for World Heritage Site status following are from Gujarat:

-Archaeological remains of a Harappa Port-Town, Lothal(15 April 2014)
-Dholavira: A Harappan City(15 April 2014)
-Historical city of Ahmedabad(31 March 2014)
-Wild Ass Sanctuary, Litle Rann of Kutch(15 March 2006)
-Sites of Satyagrah, India’s non-violent freedom movement(15 April 2014)
(About the Sites of Satyagraha: There are total 22 sites mentioned in the list which include 6 from Gujarat. They are: Gujarat Vidyapith, Sites of Bardoli Satyagraha, Sites of Kheda Satyagraha, Dandi March route, Sabarmati Ashram and Kochrab Ashram in Ahmedabad.)
