Gordon Brown to address MEPs on Scotland and the rise of nationalist movements in Europe

Former UK prime minister Gordon Brown visits Brussels to discuss Scottish Independence Referendum.

Press release from David Martin MEP:

Former UK prime minister Gordon Brown MP will be speaking in the European Parliament in Brussels about the Scottish Independence Referendum at 10:15am CET (09:15 BST) on Thursday June 26th.

Introduced by former European Parliament President and Leader of the Socialists and Democrats, Martin Schulz, and chaired by Scottish MEP David Martin, Mr Brown will consider the rise of nationalist movements in Europe, and specifically, the progressives’ response to Scottish nationalism and the September 18th referendum.

"There will be great interest in this speech. The prospect of Scottish independence has serious implications for the EU and for many Member States who have secessionist movements of their own" David Martin MEP

His theme will be ‘Independence and Interdependence’ and he will seek to explain why political nationalism, which was absent in Scotland for almost 300 years, has emerged as a powerful, but not unstoppable force.

He will draw lessons for what Britain should do and how Europe must change in the wake of widespread discontent reflected in both nationalist support and other social movements.

Speaking about the event, David Martin MEP said: There will be great interest in this speech. The prospect of Scottish independence has serious implications for the EU and for many Member States who have secessionist movements of their own.”

The meeting, which is open to the press, will take place in European Parliament building PHS 1A002, 10:15-11:15 (CET), on Thursday June 26th.
