KANPUR: Five school children were injured when the school van, they were travelling in, was hit by a speeding tanker near Keshavpuram crossing under the limits of Kalyanpur police on Thursday. According to the police, the school van was on way to Shivli road when it was hit by a tanker.
The speeding tanker, however, had earlier hit a two-wheeler few metres away from the Keshavpuram crossing.

After hitting the two-wheeler, when the locals tried to chase the tanker, the driver of the tanker lost control over the vehicle and rammed it into a school van, injuring five children. "At the time of the incident, nearly eight persons, including seven school children, the driver of the van, were in the vehicle," said station house officer of Kalyanpur while talking to TOI.
Five of the injured children were admitted to a nearby hospital, while two others identified as Anjani Sharan Gupta and his minor son, who were riding on a two-wheeler were treated at a private nursing home. Some of them were discharged after preliminary treatment.
The tanker driver managed to escape after abandoning the vehicle. A case has been registered against the unidentified driver. The vehicle has been impounded and the driver has been booked by Kalyanpur police.
Separate teams have been formed and a hunt was launched to trace the driver. "We are trying to reach the owner of the vehicle to trace the whereabouts of the accused driver," said a police officer.
