RANCHI: Congress is set to give a bigger role to former Union minister Subodh Kant Sahay in the upcoming assembly elections. The Congress high command has asked Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee (JPCC) to constitute an election campaign committee to manage poll preparations, including selection of candidates, funding for their election expenditure, organizing campaigns for them among other activities.
JPCC wants a non-tribal face for this post.
Names of five senior Congress leaders are doing the rounds for the post of the chief of the election campaign committee. Minister Rajendra Prasad Singh and senior leaders Furkan Ansari, Alamgir Alam and Gulfam Muzibi are also in the consideration.
Sources close to the developments, however, said that Sahay is the most experienced among them. The sources said Sahay is also acceptable to all sections in Congress and has the minimum number of opponents. "It is unlikely that Sahay will contest the assembly elections and he is among the best contenders for the post," said a Congress leader.
JPCC chief Sukhdeo Bhagat said Sahay is in consideration, but a decision will be taken at the competent level. The process of forming the committee has begun and names of eligible chiefs are being considered. The ECC will be formed in August.
A former MP from, Sahay lost to BJP's Ram Tahal Chaudhary from Ranchi Lok Sabha seat in 2014 elections.
