MADURAI: The eco park at Courtallam is gearing up for the upcoming ‘horticultural show’ to be held as part of the ‘saral vizha’ on July 27 and the entire park is getting spruced up with preparation of flower beds, cleaning of fountain and repairing of the eco pond to present the visitors with a horticultural feast on the grand day.
According to S Raja Mohamed, deputy director of horticulture, Tirunelveli, the park, which was established in 1959 to the south of the five falls and spread over an area of 37.23 acres is an ecological wonder on its own.
It has places like the eco-pond, bamboo avenue, bamboo drive, butterfly park and its own flower garden. The children’s play area and water sport area attract many tourists.
The landscaping also includes a main walk, stream walk, sunken garden, adventure play area, rock garden, scented garden, viewers’ gallery, fern garden and a food court inside the premises. It is tropical delight as it houses many large fruit trees like mango, lime, and temperate fruit trees like rambutan, rose apple and mangoosteen. A stroll around the park would definitely give a person a sense of wellbeing, with its non-polluted air from these exotic trees, said Mohamed.
Visitors would have an opportunity to see a flower show on the lines of that seen in Kodaikanal during the three-day festival which starts on July 27, when 15 varieties of flowers including carnations, andrenum, hollycock, alstromeria, daisy, asters, sweet lillium, birds of paradise from Kodaikanal and hybrid tea roses, anthurium, gladiolus, asparagus from Bangalore and heliconium from Thiruvananthapuram have been grown year for this year’s show.
Floral arrangements like ‘angry bird’ and ‘giant panda’ will also be on display. Students can benefit from the display of rare plants which would be labelled in English and Tamil. The reception arch would comprise a variety of fruits and farmers would be educated on the benefits of drip irrigation during the show, he said.
