NEW DELHI: Traffic congestion in south Delhi is likely to worsen with the public works department planning to repair the Ashram flyover through the next two months.
According to the plan, PWD will block the carriageway towards Sarai Kale Khan for repairing the expansion joints that have worn out. The repair work on the 450-metre stretch is expected to start on July 27 and continue till September 25.
Police said that after September 25, a similar arrangement will be in place for the carriageway going towards Moolchand.
Traffic cops said that during the repair work, one lane of the two-lane carriageway will be barricaded by construction workers and a space of about three metres will be left for the vehicles. They added that signage will be in place to divert heavy vehicles.
In order to prevent congestions, the police have suggested motorists coming from the Andrews Ganj chowk to take a left turn to Bhisham Pitamah Marg, turn under the Lodhi flyover and enter the Barapullah corridor to reach Sarai Kale Khan. Motorists coming from the Moolchand side may take a left turn on the Ring Road to Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, take a U-turn from under the Lodhi flyover and enter Barapullah.
Police said that the stretch between Captain Gaur Marg and Ashram Chowk may be turned into a no-stopping zone while the repairs are on.
“Motorists are advised to follow the diversions and obey instructions of the traffic police,” said Anil Shukla, joint CP, traffic.
Police officials added that traffic snarls may be witnessed at the Moolchand crossing and Mathura Road-Ashram crossing during peak hours as this stretch is a major connecting point for vehicles heading towards Noida. Officials said that efforts will be made to divert the heavy vehicles through the Barapullah elevated road.
