Tornado kills two at Virginia campground
A tornado hit a Virginia campground Thursday morning, killing two people and injuring 36, according to a report from the National Weather Service.
The storm hit the Cherrystone Family Camping and RV Resort in Northampton County, on the state’s Eastern Shore on Thursday morning, after a tornado warning.
It was classified as an EF-1, the second-lowest ranking on the intensity scale, but still brought winds of 80 to 100 mph, downing trees and damaging structures along an eight-mile trail that began in the Chesapeake Bay.
The two dead were a couple from New Jersey who were killed when a tree fell on their tent, the Virginia State Police told the Associated Press.
The campground hosted more than 1,300 visitors. The majority were vacationing, but some are permanent residents, Laura Southard, a spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Emergency Services, told the Los Angeles Times.
