A car fire on Thursday afternoon piled up traffic on northbound Interstate 17 near Thomas Road in Phoenix.

Phoenix Fire Department worked to douse the flames that produced dark, black smoke near the Thomas Road overpass, said Mark Vanacore, a Phoenix fire spokesman.

Vanacore said no injuries were reported.

An eyewitness said fire consumed a small SUV on the I-17, with flames jutting out of the windows and trunk.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials directed traffic in the area as it began to back up, Vanacore said.

Traffic was back to normal by 2:45 p.m.
