Ecstasy turned to agony as they couldn't build on Danny North's early goal and were beaten 3-1 (4-3 on aggregate) by Rosenborg at the Showgrounds.

The Bit O'Red made the perfect start with finishing off a fine team move to score after 13 minutes.

The visitors struck back three minutes later when Pal Andre Helland seized on a loose ball  and flew a shot past Gary Rogers and into the top corner.

The advantage that John Coleman's side had earned in Norway was gone three minutes after the break when  Mikkel Diskerud capitalised on loose Sligo defending to play in Mike Jensen who rifled in Rosenborg's second to restore parity to the tie.

Danny North came agonisingly close to hitting back for Sligo  in the 57th minute after he was superbly played through by John Russell but his shot went agonisingly wide.

Rosenborg then struck for the decisive goal as Jensen pounced on a rebound from Diskerud's shot and he made no mistake.

Sligo needed two and could have had a penalty with 15 minutes remaining when sub Ruairi Keating was pushed in the area but the ref waved play on.

Sligo couldn't find a response and they exit European football for this season.

The performance of the night came from Dundalk who beat Hajduk Split 2-1 in Croatia but lost 3-2 on aggregate.

Trailing 2-0 from the first leg at Oriel Park, things got worse for Stephen Kenny's men when Ivorian teenager Jean Evrard Kouassi gave the hosts the lead after 25 minutes.

The Lilywhites refused to give up and were thrown a huge lifeline when Pat Hoban rounded the keeper to score after 66 minutes.

A huge shock seemed on the cards Chris Shields produced an amazing pass to pick out Kurtis Byrne at the back post to make it 2-1 on the night with 16 minutes left.

Dundalk searched desperately for the third away goal that would have sent them through but it never arrived.

Derry City bowed out of European football for 2014 after a 5-1 defeat (6-1 on aggregate) to Shakhtar Soligorsk at the Sroitel Stadium.

Amazingly, the Candystripes cancelled out the hosts' first leg advantage thanks to a goal from Michael Duffy inside six minutes but parity only lasted three minutes as Sergei Balanovich hit back for the Belorussians.

Georgian player Alexander Guruli made it 2-0 after 28 minutes after a cruel deflection and second half goals from Dmitri Osipenko, Nikolai Yanush and Ilya Galyuza completed the rout of Peter Hutton's side.

Northern Ireland's Linfield suffered heartache too as they were unable to cling on to the 1-0 lead with which they headed for AIK Solna.

The visitors remained ahead in the tie until the 56th minute, when Kennedy Igboananike levelled to set the stage for Henok Goitom to put the Swedes through 18 minutes from time.

Crusaders too emerged with a positive result, although they could only draw 1-1 with Swedes IF Brommapojkarna at Seaview after losing the first leg 4-0.

Skipper Colin Coates put the home side ahead with 17 minutes gone, but Dardan Rexhepi equalised within 10 minutes to secure a 5-1 aggregate win.

Meanwhile, Barclays Premier League Hull will face Trencin in their first ever European tie - although the Slovakians had to survive a concerted fightback by FK Vojvodina, who trailed 4-0 going into the second leg but won 3-0 in Serbia.
