Bulls GM Forman on McDermott: 'a fit with this team in the long term'

Bulls general manager Gar Forman said Wednesday that the team envisions first-round pick Doug McDermott being a long-term fit in Chicago.

Forman spoke about McDermott during an interview on the Mully and Hanley Show in Chicago.

McDermott, whom the Bulls acquired in a trade on draft night, was reported Wednesday as part of a trade package Chicago is offering to Minnesota for star power forward Kevin Love.

“It’s not just his ability to shoot it, but he knows how to play the game,” Forman said. “He’s got more to his game. He can go inside. He can shoot it on the move. He can create his own shot. He’s got a real high basketball IQ. There will be an adjustment period for him, but we think he’s going to be a fit with this team in the long term.”

The Cleveland Cavaliers are believed to be the leading contenders in the Love sweepstakes.

McDermott led the nation in scoring at 26.7 points per game during his senior season at Creighton and was the consensus national player of the year.

The 6-foot-8, 225-pound forward averaged 18.0 points and 4.0 rebounds over four summer league games and was one of 13 players chosen for a select team that will train with Team USA at a camp in Las Vegas later this summer.

The other players reported as part of the potential package are forwards Taj Gibson and Nikola Mirotic.
