The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay says war crimes may have been committed against civilians in Gaza.
Ms Pillay cited the example of Israeli shells hitting the Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah, which reportedly killed at least three people and wounded dozens of others, as one incident which needed to be independently investigated.
Ms Pillay also condemned Hamas and other militant groups for "indiscriminate attacks in Israel".
So how can war crimes committed by either side of this conflict be investigated and what impact would this have?
