GUWAHATI: In what is fast becoming a pre-Independence Day routine, at least one person was killed and three others injured in a bomb blast triggered by suspected Ulfa (Independent) militants near Krishnai police station in Goalpara district on Wednesday morning.
Mujibur Rahman, a tea-stall owner, succumbed to his injuries at Goalpara Civil Hospital. The wounded, identified as Kosumuddin, Johorul Islam and Akhtar Hussain, are undergoing treatment and are stable.
"Around 8 am, Kosumuddin, Johorul Islam and Hussain were having a cup of tea at Mujibur's stall, when an explosive planted in a bicycle exploded. Mujibur was sitting in a pan shop located on the veranda of the tea-stall. He was rushed to the hospital but could not be saved," said Krishnai police.
Goalpara SP Nitul Gogoi said he suspected the blast was caused by the Paresh Baruah-led Ulfa (I). "Ulfa (I) is trying to execute subversive activities ahead of the Independence Day celebrations," said Gogoi. A preliminary probe revealed that an unidentified person, suspected to be an Ulfa (I) cadre, parked his IED-laden bicycle and left the place immediately.
Police and paramilitary forces have already launched an operation in Krishnai, Goalpara and neighboring areas to apprehend the culprits.
"A group of Ulfa hardliners, under the instruction of Drishti Rajkhowa, are plotting subversive activities ahead of the Independence Day. We've succeeded in thwarting several such attempts earlier. With the support of Garo ultras, these militants are sneaking into the area," said a police official at Krishnai.

The close nexus between Ulfa (I) and Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants has often been reported. Cadres from both outfits are involved in gun-running and extortion in the area. However, Krishnai locals blamed police for failing to protect people.
Meanwhile, chief minister Tarun Gogoi held a meeting with top cops here to discuss the situation. He announced ex-gratia of Rs 8 lakh for the deceased and free medical treatment for the injured.
