As many as 52 members of the Friends of Police, Chennai, were at the Coimbatore Police Commissionerate on Wednesday, pedalling awareness messages. And, they received hero’s welcome from the Police with Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan leading from the front.
The 52 members bicycled from Chennai and had stopped over in Coimbatore after touching a number of districts en route.
The team headed by Mahendran from Chennai had started on July 6 with the aim of creating Friends of Police groups in schools and colleges after creating awareness among students, plant one crore saplings across Tamil Nadu to realise former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s dream of greening the State, voice opposition to violence against women, highlight the need for teaching self-defence techniques to women, enrol a member of every family as Friends of Police, create awareness on the need for reducing use of plastics, educate people on the importance of rain water harvesting and stress the need for keeping the environment clean.
S. Senthilkumar, coordinator, said that at the Commissionerate, the City Police team led by Mr. Viswanathan honoured the team members with shawls and saw them off to Mettupalayam. The team would then bicycle to Erode, Namakkal, Salem and return to Chennai on July 29.
Additional Director General of Police Pratheep V. Philip had flagged of the bicycle rally at Marina Beach on July 6.
