A Corporation School from Coimbatore was among the three schools to represent Tamil Nadu in a national level ‘digital equalizer’ (DE) contest held for Government and Corporation schools by the American India Foundation (AIF).

Of the 12 Coimbatore Corporation schools that took part in the State-level finals which featured a total of 42 schools, the team from Corporation High School, Varadharajapuram, was among those short-listed.

The other two were Chennai schools.

In the DE Contest, the students and teachers have to submit digital stories on the topic ‘A peep into my future’ on one of the following themes: education or environment or health.

According to V. Alexander, regional coordinator (TN) for DE, the objective was to expose students to a competition in which they can show their skills in multimedia, technology, researching, writing and creativity.

The team from Corporation High School, Varadharajapuram, focussed on how an educated boy spent his day constructively in activities like reading newspapers, using computers, performing science experiments and in sports.

However, an illiterate boy was shown as idling all day and watching television and movies.

The team from Corporation High School, Varadharajapuram, comprised: K.Vasanth (Class IX), B. Vasanth Kumar (Class IX), L. John Samuvel (Class IX), M. Vignesh (Class IX), R. Naveen Kumar (Class VIII), M. Praveen Kumar (Class VIII), M. Thirumalai (Class VI) and S. Rahul (Class VI).

The AIF was formed in 2001 and is made of Indian diaspora in the United States. The Coimbatore Corporation had inked an MoU with the Foundation to implement a ‘Digital Equaliser’ programme in all the 27 Corporation schools.
