Some German beer drinkers say 'ja' to Bud

Joe Butterworth

Interesting article about American craft beers expanding to Europe. I wish them well, but I would advise them not to stereotype their customers ("U.S. craft beers brewing a big following in Europe," Business, Tuesday).

For example, it's accepted knowledge that Germans drink only lager from glasses or mugs (never from the bottle) brewed under the German Purity Law of 1487. Right?

Well, maybe. Read on.

It was a Sunday morning in 1992 as we drove in a small town near Munich. Ahead I noticed a group of young men standing outside the door to a small restaurant. As we got closer. I noticed that they were drinking beer. From bottles!

As we slowly passed by, I identified the beer. Budweiser! Every last bottle! And judging from the smiles, they were really enjoying it! So craft brewers, beware.
