BANGALORE: Five members of the infamous Irani gangs are in police custody.Lala Sameer Jaffer Hussain alias Lala, 35, Gulam Ali Faruvali Syed, 26, Jafar Ali Syed, 31, all residents of Thane in Maharashtra, and Usman, 32 and Abbas Ali, 28, both from Gulbarga, were involved in at least 60 cases of attention diversion in Bangalore.
Smooth operators, the five would claim to be policemen and warn gullible women wearing gold jewellery that thieves were on the prowl.
They asked the women to remove the ornaments and, in the guise of helping them, scooted with the booty.
Police have recovered gold ornaments weighing 2.1 kg, a four-wheeler and one bike from the gang led by Lala.
The gangsters cheated up to 10 women in a day and fled to Mumbai, a Bangalore police officer said.
