MANGALORE: Police stations across Karnataka have been told to handle cases of crimes against women and children with sensitivity, and conduct a fair probe. This forms part of the general instructions issued by the office of the director general and inspector general of police (DG&IGP), Bangalore. Some of them are:
* Register cases without delay, follow them up and arrest the accused.
* Ensure women and child helplines are in order
* Hold periodic meetings with educational institutions, especially residential ones, at station, sub-divisional and district levels
* Educational institutions must do a pre-hiring background check of security guards, and post female guards at women's and girls' hostels.
* Institutions need to install CCTV cameras at parking lots and main entrances.
* Ensure seamless coordination between law-enforcers and school stakeholders to guarantee students' safety
* Stay off turf wars since crimes against children and those committed by minors entail inter-departmental coordination
* Counselling in cases of domestic violence is an option; cases of cognizable offences need to be mandatorily registered
