Native American high school student gives emotional speech on impact of Indian team names

WASHNGTON — Dahkota Franklin Kicking Bear Brown, 15 and a rising high school junior in California, stole the show when he spoke Tuesday at a news conference on Indian team names at the Center for American Progress.

Brown talked about attending high school football games against a rival school that uses the name “Redskins” and how that school uses stereotypical war paint and buckskin. Worse, he said, are the opposing fans who chant “Kill the ‘Redskins.’ ”

“All of these actions, along with many more, hurt my heart,” Brown said. “All of these screaming fans don’t know how offensive they are. Or that they are even in the presence of a Native. Most of the time, they don’t even know that Natives still exist.”

A 28-page report, with 120 footnotes, about the impact of Indian mascots on Native youth was released at the news conference. But you don’t need to read it. Just watch Brown tell how he feels.
