SIT members rude, rape victim’s father tells HC

The victim’s father sought before Justice V M Kanade and P D Kode, a probe by CBI into the case.

The Bombay High Court (HC) was Thursday informed that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed at its instance behaved rudely while recording the statement of a 15-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped in Jogeshwari and was forced to marry her rapist by the local police and a corporator.

The victim’s father sought before Justice V M Kanade and P D Kode, a probe by CBI into the case. The court, therefore, asked the petitioner to file an application for the prayer.

In an affidavit filed in the court, a social worker taking care of the teenaged victim told the court that police asked her insensitive questions while recording her statements on July 21 . The court was also told by the petitioner that the officers in the SIT are not of the rank of assistant commissioner of police, as previously directed by the HC.

“It is submitted that the investigation may be transferred to CBI. It is submitted that he would like to file a criminal application seeking the said relief,” the court observed.

The court, therefore, asked the Additional Public Prosecutor, Purnima Kantharia to give details of the composition of SIT and status of investigation into the case by August 6.

“The state to also file an affidavit stating therein the steps taken by them as has been submitted in this court today. Further report about the progress in the investigation may be submitted in a sealed envelop,” the court said while posting the matter on August 6.The court had directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police to provide round-the-clock protection to the victim’s family. and had ordered to form the SIT on July 9.
