MUMBAI: The principal of Fatima Devi English High School, where a class VIII boy allegedly slashed the face of a class X student following an argument on Monday, has assured the victim’s parents that the school will soon instal CCTV cameras on the premises.
On Wednesday, the victim’s parents, accompanied by other parents and Maharashtra Navanirman Sena (MNS) members, met principal Kenneth Marchon to demand that the Malad school take steps to avoid such violent incidents in future.
“The principal assured us that the school will bear our son’s medical expenses, instal CCTV cameras on the campus, set up a committee to monitor the students when they leave the premises after school and also seek police’s help to keep anti-social elements at bay,” said the victim’s father.
The MNS members, who blamed “older boys in the vicinity” of being a bad influence on the students, said they will meet the additional commissioner of police to demand swift action in the slashing incident. “The schoolboys often mingle with youths from the vicinity, who could have been a bad influence on them. The police must investigate if one of these older boys had given the class VIII student the idea of using a blade to attack his schoolmate,” said Akhilesh Choubey, general secretary (legal), MNS.
The parents said they also plan to approach the state education department against the school. “The safety of our children is at risk if the school does not expel the student. We have already spoken to the school about this, but if they do not initiate action by July 28, we will complain to the education department,” said a mother of two children who study in the Malad school.
The parents also alleged that the school had been soft on the attacker despite having displayed bad behaviour in the past. “The boy was expelled last year after he slapped one of the teachers, but the school took him back. The parents of the boy have not responded in spite of several complaints from the school. If the school allows such a student to continue studying there, it is threat to other students,” said another parent.
Marchon remained unavailable for comment.
The victim, who suffered a deep cut from the right cheek to the neck, is recuperating in a private hospital. “My son was to be discharged on Wednesday, but he continues to have difficulty in eating or drinking, so his stay at the hospital has been extended by a day or two,” said his father.
