Couple rescued from Metro tracks in Chhatarpur station

A 27-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman — both engineering students — allegedly attempted suicide by jumping in front of a Metro train at the Chhatarpur Metro station in South Delhi on Wednesday. They were rescued by Metro officials after the train operator applied emergency brakes in time.

A police officer said, “Both are students of Kurukshetra University. The woman is a BTech student residing in Ambala Cantonment, while the man is an MTech student, residing in Kalka. Prima facie,  it appears that the two were in a relationship and had made a suicide pact to jump in front of a Metro train at Chhatarpur station. The train was headed towards Gurgaon on platform no. 1. The Metro operator applied the emergency brakes after the spotting the two on the track. The incident was reported around 10.30 am. Metro rail crew pulled the two to safety from the under the second coach.”

However, the woman in her statement to police claimed that she was pushed on to the tracks by the MTech student.

The train resumed its journey by 11 am. The two students sustained head injuries but were conscious when they were rescued, police said.
“They were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Care Centre. Both are out of danger,” the officer said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railway) Sanjay Bhatia said, “We are going through the CCTV footage from the Metro station to ascertain the nature of the incident. Based on the woman’s statement, we have registered a case of attempt to murder against the man. Further investigations are on.”

The woman’s cousin said, “She is out of danger. Though her family is in Ambala, she is living with us in Kamla Nagar (North Delhi). She was staying with us because it was more convenient for her to go to college. I know she is good friends with the MTech student. My sister was telling me that my cousin was not the kind to attempt suicide.”

A Metro spokesperson said, “Two passengers — a boy and a girl — jumped in front of the train at Chhatarpur going towards Gurgaon at 10.48 am. The train operator stopped the train by applying emergency brakes and the security staff rescued them from the under-frame of the second coach. Later, they gave clearance at 10.57 am. Both have received head injuries but were conscious. They were taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre by ambulance.”
