Juan Monaco clinched a 6-2 2-6 6-4 victory over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez to reach the quarter-finals of the Credit Agricole Suisse Open in Gstaad.

The Argentine’s win was something of an upset despite the fact he went into the clash having won five of his previous seven meetings with Garcia-Lopez.

The win did not come easy as the pair battled for over two hours before Monaco, who lost in the last eight to eventual winner Mikhail Youzhny in last year’s tournament, managed to prevail.

"I like Gstaad, last year I played a great match against the champion. We both deserved to win it. I was happy with conditions and I'm back again,” he said.

"This year, I'm feeling great. I was a little nervous when I was serving for the match at 5-2 (in the decisind set). I missed that opportunity. But I just tried to get focused on the changeover, thinking of where I'm going to serve.

"I had to play relaxed, it's the only way to play a good game. The last game was difficult but I'm m happy with how I played today.”

Monaco will face Thomaz Bellucci for a place in the semi-finals after the Brazilian also sprung a surprise with a 6-4 6-4 win over fifth seed Federico Delbonis.

In the bottom half of the draw, second seed Marcel Granollers booked his spot in the quarter-finals with a 6-1 6-4 win over home wildcard Yann Marti.

Granollers will next face fellow Spaniard Pablo Andujar, who defeated Blaz Rola 6-3 6-3.
