Couple 'falls' in front of Metro, badly hurt

NEW DELHI: A young man and woman were severely injured after they mysteriously fell in front of a Metro train at Chhatarpur station on Wednesday morning. What initially appeared to be a bid to fulfil a suicide pact turned out to be a purported attempt to murder the young woman after she issued a statement to police saying that her friend had pushed her on the tracks.
Amit Chauhan (25) and Mohini Niglani (22) were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Center where doctors said they had suffered injuries to their heads and limbs and were in a serious condition.
Eyewitnesses said, within minutes of entering the station, they saw the pair jumping in front of an entering train. They raised an alarm after which a team of CISF and Delhi police personnel rushed to the spot and pulled them out from below the train.
Police said that Amit and Mohini are both engineering students at a private university and were headed towards a mall in Gurgaon around 9am. They said Amit had planned to marry Mohini but was having trouble convincing her family members. This might have led him to plan a suicide pact. Amit told police he was a resident of Police Colony in Kallu area of Kurukshetra and his father, Joginder, was a policeman. He was on the verge of completing his M Tech.
Police said Mohini is a resident of Anand Vihar in Ambala and was staying at Hudson Lane in Delhi to prepare for her BEd. She was in the final year of her BTech course.
"We are looking at the CCTV footage and probing into the allegations made by the woman," DCP, Railways, Sanjay Bhatia, said. Police said a case of attempt to murder will be registered against the man if the allegation was found to be true. Both families have been informed about the incident.
