Middletown, PA (PRWEB) July 23, 2014 -- Carolina Village opened its doors in 1974—40 years ago this month—with the hope of providing seniors the social, cultural, educational and recreational activities necessary to empower them to live active lives. Full. Purposeful. Involved. It’s Hendersonville’s only continuing care retirement community, providing comprehensive on-site health care.
Because of this commitment to its residents, in the spring of 2014, Carolina Village became one of the nation’s first communities to bring “downtown” inside. The senior community expanded, adding a movie theatre, a bistro-style sports bar (opening early next year), an indoor lap pool, a warm-water therapy pool, an exercise room with a special floor—so soft an egg won’t break on it—and a community room for classrooms and large group meetings.
“We wanted to bring everything into one easily accessible place—meet our resident’s needs all under one roof,” stated Kevin Parries, Executive Director of Carolina Village.
The therapy pool, a HydroWorx 2000 Series pool, is the showcase of the new ‘Main Street’ offering. The pool’s platform rises to meet users at floor height then lowers into the water to a maximum depth of 6 feet. The floor of the pool then doubles as an underwater treadmill with speeds from 0-8.5 mph.
“We’re thrilled to be bringing this technology to the area,” continued Parries.
Five cameras are positioned below the water’s surface of the therapy pool, allowing clinicians a clear view of patients’ mechanics as they walk.
“The underwater treadmill allows us to work with our residents in a pain-free environment,” stated Laura Husak, Enhancement Coach at Carolina Village. “This is especially helpful for someone recovering from knee or hip replacement surgery. The cameras provide invaluable data.”
Carolina Village also offers over 30 different clubs and organizations on campus, including woodworking, hiking, and traveling. They strive to continually create new activities to interest residents and encourage participation in classes and workshops around residents’ favorite subjects, all in an effort to improve quality of life. The facility even partners with the Blue Ridge Community College, offering on-site classes on technology.
“Twenty four years ago I was invited to become a member of the board of directors of Carolina Village,” stated Amy Pace, retired educator and long-time resident of the community. “Eleven years later we moved in. It was that experience on the board—seeing that compassion—that caused me to sit up and take notice.”
“Wellness for our residents in all aspects of life is very important to us and we work very hard to meet their spiritual, emotional and physical needs. All of the additions we’ve recently made work together to accomplish this,” affirmed Parries.
“My husband has now passed and having people around who so obviously care—I don’t fear being alone and I don’t fear being sick,” Ms. Pace explained. “It’s a very freeing experience to come here early enough to enjoy all that’s offered here.”
