IoD Backs Dyke's Condemnation of FIFA Governance

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) LONDON, July 22 -- The Institute of Directors issued the following news release: Commenting on today's appearance by FA Chairman Greg Dyke at the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, Oliver Parry, Corporate Governance Adviser at the IoD, said: "Greg Dyke is absolutely right that governance at FIFA needs to change. The power structure at the governing body of world football is both dysfunctional and unaccountable.

"Governance issues are increasingly on the public agenda, and not just in the corporate world. It is very damaging for the image of sports governance that FIFA has become associated in the public mind with corruption and secrecy at a time when people rightly expect more transparency and far higher standards.

"More must be done at FIFA to restore trust in the organisation and its processes, and we hope that Michael Garcia's report is a catalyst for change. In time, there is no reason why FIFA cannot become a beacon of best practice in sports governance." The IoD has called on FIFA to: * Transform its Executive Committee into a modern board of directors, containing a significant number of independent board members directly elected by the FIFA Congress.

* Replace the role of President (currently occupied by Sepp Blatter) with two separate positions of Chairman and CEO, as is the norm for large multinational organisations.

* Undertake a wide-ranging review of FIFA's key processes and policies, including those relating to World Cup hosting decisions.
