Behold an 18-inch panel rolling on itself without suffering any damage

Samsung has just released the shock-inducing 105-Inch curved UHD TV, so of course, its great rival LG would not let the week pass without some means of countering hype.

The company didn't have anything ready to release, nothing that would have really matched up to that mortgage-priced monster, so it got creative.

Below is a video of its upcoming 18-inch OLED display. Its 18-inch rollable OLED display, to be more precise. The South Korean technology corporation has been lobbying for the acceptance of flexible screens for years now, and this is the latest and best of them.

It's one thing to make a phone-sized screen that can bend. Making it roll is another matter entirely, and creating a larger one, a TV-sized one that can do the same gets even harder.

LG did it though, and it's pretty close to rendering the necessary internal electronics flexible as well. It is quite obvious from the half-minute flick.

The only drawback is the resolution. At 1200 x 810, its detail level is leagues behind not just 4K / UHD (3840 x 2160 pixels), but also Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels, the current “normal”).

I'm not altogether sure what applications a rollable TV could have, other than easy transportation when moving house or going on a trip (you can roll it together with a blanket or two for safety).
