Police and students clashed during which they pelted stones at each other in Imphal on Tuesday. Some students who sustained injuries were hospitalised. Police are patrolling the trouble prone areas to maintain law and order.

Students of three schools, Modern Academy, Pioneer School and City higher secondary took out a procession demanding reimplementation of the Inner Line Permit in Manipur. Police in riot gears intercepted them near the Palace ground. Police fired tear gas canisters and resorted to baton charging. One student, Praven, sustained injuries.

Police also whisked away several other students only to be released far away.

Later the students brought out desks, benches and other school furniture of C.C. higher secondary school to burn them on the road. When police tried to intervene the students pelted stones. Police also retaliated. Government sources hinted that the educational institutes may be closed down to stem the tide.

There have been demands from many circles to re-implement the Inner Line permit saying that the number of non-locals coming to settle in Manipur is increasing.
