A day after a Manipuri man was beaten to death in the Capital, representatives from the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party met Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi and urged him to take strict action in cases related to violence against people from the Northeast States living in the city.
Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay led the delegation which discussed with Mr. Bassi the increasing cases of violence and appealed for better security for women. “We also want the Police Commissioner to set up Women Police Stations in each district and to improve the complaint redressal system at the reception level at police stations,” Mr. Upadhyay told reporters after the meeting. He also discussed other aspects of law and order such as drug trafficking.
Special helplineBJP leaders also demanded that a special helpline (number 1064) should be started for lodging complaints against corruption so that hawkers and common citizens may be able to come out openly against the corrupt government functionaries.
Suggestion were also made to initiate teams of student volunteers who can serve as the ‘eyes and ears’ of Delhi Police on the lines of Special Police Officers, said Mr. Upadhyay.
The delegation informed Mr. Bassi about large scale interference in construction work and alleged harassment of hawkers by the local police. They demanded that the interference of the police in both the cases should be stopped.
Meanwhile, members of the Delhi Youth Congress along with people from the Northeast held a protest march to the Parliament on Tuesday against the murder of 29-year-old Salouni from Manipur on Monday.
Accusing the Narendra Modi Government of having failed to provide security to the people from Northeast in Delhi, Youth Congress president Amit Malik questioned why the Prime Minister has not visited the victim’s family yet.
