Now, policemen turn nurses to accused

KOTTAYAM: Policemen from Munnar who have been waiting at medical college hospital here for the past 10 days to take a murder accused into custody are caught in a fix with doctors yet to certify him medically fit.
None of the relatives of Vadivel (28), accused of stabbing one Balasubramaniam (62) to death in a KSRTC bus near Marayur in Idukki on July 13, has turned up to look after him.Vadivel is bedridden and accomplishes his primary needs on the bed itself while the cops double up as nurses to him.
Strangely, the doctors attending to Vadivel are yet to diagnose his problem. He was admitted to the hospital on July 13 itself after it was found that he had consumed poison. "He is behaving strangely. We want to remand him as early as possible," Munnar circle inspector A R Shanihan said.
The hospital has, meanwhile, constituted a board of doctors to examine Vadivel to find if he is medically fit or has any health problems. "We have constituted a board of doctors from medicine, neurology, surgery and psychiatry departments. They will be examining Vadivel on Wednesday," hospital superintendent Dr Tigi Thomas Jacob said.
Vadivel had stabbed Balasubramaniam after intercepting the bus near Lakkam waterfalls and the crime was witnessed by over 25 people. He had also dragged Balasubramaniam out of the vehicle, where the latter breathed his last. Vadivel and his wife had alighted from the same bus at Pallanad, a few kilometres away from the crime spot, dropped his wife home and chased the bus on his motorcycle.
After the crime, he had fled the scene but police picked him up from near his house. Police are also clueless on the motive for the crime as they are yet to question the accused.
