Corruption in force, safety of NE residents: BJP chief takes up 16 issues with top cop

Upadhyaya said there was a strong need to sensitise and educate the police force when dealing with Delhi residents.

Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay called on the Commissioner of Police B S Bassi on Tuesday to discuss at length the need to curb corruption within the police force, especially at the grassroot-level.

While discussing 16 points dealing with safety of people in the capital, Upadhyay emphasised that corrupt police officers should be arrested on charges of corruption.

“Beat constables and police officers take bribes or protection money from the lower rung, extort money from poor auto-rickshaw drivers, vendors and shopkeepers. There is an urgent need to put a stop to this practice.
Also there is a strong nexus between police and corporation officials when it comes to illegal practices and corruption in the construction sector. The Commissioner agreed there was deep corruption in the police force,” Upadhyay said.

Upadhyay also said the main thrust of his discussion with the Commissioner was to urgently look into safety of persons from Northeast states of the country. He emphasised the need to ensure students, especially girls, were safe in the city.

In case of police having a shortage of manpower, he suggested that a voluntary student security force be formed to help the force.
