There is a need for India and Sri Lanka to engage in a strategic dialogue, chairman of the BJP Committee for Strategic Action Subramanian Swamy said after a meeting with Sri Lanka’s Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa here on Tuesday.

“We discussed a gamut of issues, and felt such a strategic dialogue would be mutually beneficial,” Dr. Swamy said.

The BJP leader said that Mr. Rajapaksa, brother of President Mahinda Rajpaksa, voiced concerns about Islamic militants allegedly receiving training in Tamil Nadu, with “financial support from Arabic countries and North America.”

“It appears from sources that some people are not happy with normalcy returning to Sri Lanka,” Dr. Swamy said.

Dr. Swamy, who was here on a two-day visit, also met Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa, also a brother of the President, and discussed issues pertaining to Indo-Lanka economic engagement.
