Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has been advised to make signing a striker a priority during the remainder of the summer transfer window.

Reports suggest that deals to bring Swansea City duo Ben Davies and Michel Vorm to the club are on the verge of completion in what has been a quiet summer for the north London club.

With Jermain Defoe having joined Toronto FC and Roberto Soldado having endured a tough first season in English football, Tottenham remain in desperate need of additional attacking resources and Anderton says a player who can produce "a moment of magic" is required to have the club competing again.

"There is no doubt that Soldado struggled last year, which was a shame because I thought he did great in Spain," Anderton told Sky Sports News Radio. "If anyone was a disappointment then that would be him. There was a poor return of goals.

"Harry Kane came in at the end of the season and did really well which probably highlighted how much Soldado struggled as of course Adebayor did well last season.

"As ever, consistency is always something that is aimed at him. No one doubts his talent and on his day he is one of the best in the world it is just how often he can produce it and want to produce it.

"There is no doubt that a new striker or two is needed in my eyes because at the end of the day top teams need goals and you've got to turn those games when you're not playing great and that are pretty dull.

"If you've got a striker who can give you that moment of magic to get the goal that changes one point into three it is so important."

Pochettino has already ruled out making wholesale changes ahead of his first season at White Hart lane, perhaps after seeing Tottenham struggle last term after making seven new additions to offset the loss of Gareth Bale.

Under both Andre Villas-Boas and Tim Sherwood, Tottenham failed to contest for a Champions League place and ahead of a move into a new stadium in 2017, Pochettino will be under pressure from chairman Daniel Levy to return the club to the continent's premier club competition.
