Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) urges residents not to transport meat outside the territories where African swine fever has been confirmed, informs LETA.

Straujuma made the statement during the Latvian Television show "Rita panorama" today, urging residents not to transport meat or objects that have been in contact with the infected animals out of the area.

"I understand people who wish to slaughter animals and take the meat somewhere else. Do not do it," Straujuma said.

She believes that the Food and Veterinary Service (FVS) has been working efficiently and is not to blame for the outbreak in Vidzeme Region.

Straujuma previously told LETA: "I do not believe that it is the FVS' negligence. The service is working well." She also believes that neither the Ministry of Agriculture, nor Minister of Agriculture Janis Duklavs (Greens and Farmers' Union) are responsible for this.

According to Straujuma, it is necessary to assess how African swine fever reached Valka (northeastern Latvia), as it is a long way away from Latgale Province.

As reported, African swine fever has been registered in Latgale and Vidzeme provinces. The first case of the disease was registered on June 26, when three infected wild boars were found dead a couple of meters away from the Belarusian border.
