Going to Mumbai happened because of a Gujarati film: Manhar Udhas
Manhar Udhas, who has sung such unforgettable numbers as Loote koi man ka nagar, Hum tumhe chahte hai aise, Har kisi ko nahin milta and Tu mera jaani hai in Bollywood films over the years, says that all of this happened because of a chance visit to Mumbai, where he went to sing for a Gujarati film. Recalls Udhas, I went to Mumbai because Manu Gadhvi was making a film in Gujarati.
He knew about my singing and wanted me to sing in it. That was the sole purpose of my visit but little did I know that it would change my life. Gadhvi knew Kalyanji-Anandji well and introduced me to them. Once, they asked me to dub for a song that Mukesh was to sing. But after about two months, I learnt that they (Mukeshji included) liked the song a lot and it became my musical debut. I never had to look back. So, in a way, I owe a lot to Gujarati films for whatever I have achieved! I feel very proud to have worked during the golden era of Hindi film music. The experience of working with the likes of Kalyanji-Anandji, S D Burman, R D Burman and Laxmikant-Pyarelal cant be described in words.
