Last week, violence had erupted in Hathras after a 22-year-old gangrape victim had committed suicide.

The married Dalit woman had been gangraped on July 12 and had subsequently poured kerosene on herself and set herself ablaze.

She was rushed to Aligarh Medical College where she died of the 80 per cent burn injuries that she had suffered.

The woman's mother and brother had placed her body on display on the road, between the Sikander Rao police station and the railway gate, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused and compensation for their loss.

This led to an angry mob attacking the police station and going on a rampage.
