Tuesday's forecast: Heat, storms for the central U.S.

Sweltering summer heat will bake much of the central and southwestern U.S. on Tuesday, while some severe storms could rattle the Midwest and Great Lakes region.

Plains, Southwest: Temperatures should rise into the 90s and 100s in most of the central and southern Plains under blazing skies. The Desert Southwest will also bake in the low 100s.

East: Typical heat and humidity, along with the threat of scattered thunderstorms, will make for a sultry day along much of the Eastern Seaboard.

Great Lakes, Midwest: Some severe thunderstorms could form over Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa and Missouri, with hail and high winds the main threats. Both Chicago and Milwaukee are in the threat area.

Weather history for July 22: In 1918, more than 500 sheep were killed by a single lightning bolt in Wasatch National Park, Utah. In 1980, Fort Worth, Waco and Wichita Falls, Texas, all hit 100 degrees for the 30th straight day.

In 2003, the temperature soared to a record high of 107 degrees in Winnemucca, Nev.
