D Srinivas wants eight MLCs disqualified

The Congress MLCs defied party leadership and voted in the Council chairman election

Hyderabad: Leader of Opposition in Telangana Legislative Council D. Srinivas on Monday met the Council Chairman and submitted a petition seeking immediate disqualification of eight Congress MLCs who have defied the party whip and voted in the election of Council chairman recently.

Mr Swamy Goud, a TRS MLC, got elected as Chairman of Telangana Legislative Council by bagging all the 21 votes that were polled, including eight from the Congress that also include Deputy Chairman of the Council Neti Vidyasagar.

Mr Srinivas along with Deputy Leader Shabbir Ali and others met Mr Swamy Goud and submitted a petition under the 10th Schedule of the Constitution, seeking disqualification of the MLCs for violating the party whip.

The eight MLCs are K.R. Amos, T. Bhanu Prasad, D. Rajeswara Rao, Md Saleem, N. Rajalingam, Neti Vidyasagar, V. Bhupal Reddy, and S. Jagadeswar Reddy. However, affairs experts say, the petition filed by Mr Srinivas seeking disqualification of eight party MLCs is not maintainable and is likely to be dismissed.

“The MLCs did not commit any crime, they have participated in the election and exercised their will that too in a secret ballot. No member can be disqualified on the ground that he
participated in election. It is the right of members to participate and vote according to their conscious, more over a whip cannot be issued by political parties for the matters concerning elections, it can be issued only on the voting of bills in the house and not otherwise,” they said.
