The announcement to make Visakhapatnam the IT capital of Andhra Pradesh has generated a lot of curiosity among Netizens, with many NRIs exuding confidence that the city has the potential to become an ideal destination for investments in IT.

In their comments to a news item published in the e-paper of The Hindu dated July 15 under the headline ‘Visakhapatnam to be IT capital of AP: Minister’, several persons had expressed their happiness over the announcement made by IT Minister Palle Raghunatha Reddy.

Chicago-based Vijay welcomed the decision, saying: “Good decision... Vizag is the only cosmopolitan city in Andhra and can definitely live up to this new challenge to be an IT hub.”

“Vizag is far better in terms of greenery than many other cities...It needs further development...that could be IT or any other... also, the most potential city in the current AP for any sort of investments...,” said Rajesh, senior software engineer based at Santa Clara.

While Appala Naidu from San Francisco said “Vizag is already a developed city. Water is a major problem here. Please select another city for the IT industry,” Sekhar Prudhvi from Hyderabad remarked, “There is no water problem. Already, desalination plant and Polavaram project are sanctioned. Think you are not from Vizag…”

Suneel Pothuraju from Singapore wanted IT to grow, but focus should not be made only in one or two sectors, and concerted efforts be made for balanced development.

Another criticism came from Arun of Hyderabad, who felt that why a peaceful city like Vizag should be made IT capital, as buildings and flyovers are not the real index of prosperity.

Shekhar from Leiden said, “Does development mean only economic development? Yes, I agree that economic development is important, but cities like Vizag are already developed economically…We do not want Vizag to be filled up with people just like Bangalore or Hyderabad.”
