Dehradun: There was no let up in heavy rains across Uttarakhand on Monday with landslides continuing to block traffic on the highways and keeping the char dham yatra suspended for the sixth consecutive day.
Moderate to heavy rains occurred at a number of places in the past 24 hours with Tanakpur receiving the highest 109 mm of rains followed by Champavat which recorded 59 mm of showers, a Disaster Management Centre spokesman here said.
Berinag received 38.2 mm while Dehradun 35.7 mm, Dharchula 35 mm, Didihat 33 mm, Gangolihat 30 mm, Haldwani 27 mm, Koshyakutauli 25 mm and Kapkot 22.5 mm, he said.
Yatra to the famous Himalayan shrines remains suspended with?Badrinath highway blocked at Sirobagad, Kedarnath highway at Lambagad, Gangotri highway at Sukhitop and Yamunotri highway at Junglechatti due to boulders falling from the hillsides following heavy rains, he said.
With boulders from landslides keeping the highways blocked, it has become difficult to transport essential commodities to many remote villages in the hills.
The Border Roads Organisation personnel are busy clearing these highways so that traffic on these routes could be restored at the earliest, the spokesman said.
Incessant rains have also sent most of the rivers including Ganga, Yamuna, Sharda, Kali and their major tributaries into spate prompting the administration to ask people living on their banks to move to safe locations.
However, all of them are still flowing below the danger mark, the spokesman said.
