Protesting lawyers on rampage in Orissa

The lawyers said they would continue the agitation till the accused policemen were not arrested.

A mob of lawyers on Monday set a police jeep on fire in the city as they agitated against the brutal attack on an advocate by policemen on Wednesday night.

The lawyers, members of the Bhubaneswar Bar Association, had blocked the NH-203 near the city court protesting against an alleged assault on one Nihar Sethi, an advocate. Sethi, was reportedly thrashed by some policemen while he was passing through Ravi Talkies square late last Wednesday.

The lawyers had been reportedly assured by the deputy commissioner of police of strong action against the policemen and compensation to the victim. But when the senior policemen took no action, the lawyers blocked the NH on Monday.

Police Commissioner R P Sharma and DCP Nitinjit Singh reached the spot following the incident and held discussions with the agitating lawyers.
