Crytek UK, the developer behind the upcoming Homefront: The Revolution, has highlighted the fact that the new title has the same DNA as other big Crytek projects like Crysis or Far Cry, allowing players access to an open world and tasking them with shooting their way through it.

The original Homefront title came from developer Kaos Studios and was published by THQ many years ago. Despite a top-notch marketing campaign, sales and critical acclaim weren't that great, leading to the studio's shutdown.

THQ still had hope and partnered with Crytek to have its new UK studio work on a sequel. Unfortunately, due to the bankruptcy, THQ's assets were auctioned off and Crytek stepped in to get the rights to the series and continue working on the new title.

Earlier this year, the sequel was revealed to be Homefront: The Revolution, a direct successor to the original title, this time focusing on the guerrilla warfare used by the U.S. citizens against their oppressors from North Korea.

According to Crytek UK's Fasahat Salim, while the game does focus on survival warfare, it still features attributes from past games made by Crytek overall, such as Crysis or Far Cry.

"We decided to focus on the guerrilla warfare aspect of things," Salim tells GRTV, "but we wanted to push it into a free-roaming world, because that is kind of the DNA of what Crytek does in first-person shooters."

"With games like Crysis and Far Cry, these are games where we allowed the player to explore a big space. We gave them an objective, yes, but they could approach it however they wanted to, and that's something we wanted to bring into this Homefront."

It won't be a pure first-person shooter, as players need to explore the open world, find ways to use the environment against their oppressors, and construct weapons or traps that can give them an advantage.

"This is just bare-boned survival and trying the best that you can to take the enemy on and use the environment around you. So scavenging, utilise the world around you, building your own weapons. This was all key to what you're going to find in Homefront: The Revolution," he adds.

The development of Homefront: The Revolution has been rocked by several reports recently about tough financial conditions at Crytek, but for now the game is set to appear in 2015 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, as it's going to be published by Deep Silver.
